My husband couldn't stop laughing when he saw me reading this book - I'm the most hopelessly untidy person he knows. "Aren't you trying to run before you can walk? Why don't you start by putting away the ironing?" he asked.



Well, doh!



How can he possibly expect me to put away the ironing until I have a beautiful Martha-style linen closet, complete with dividers, cross-referenced labels on both sheets and shelves, and two different paint effects?



How can I possibly pay bills on time until I have a dedicated home office cunningly concealed inside an antique Dutch armoire?



How can I possibly tidy my unsteady piles of magazines until I have covered my plywood Ikea magazine files in linen bookcloth and added a sashpull for ease of manoeuvrability?



Laugh all you like, husband dear, but I am completely in love with this book. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the chaos of my life, I open the pages of this book, catch a glimpse of Martha's superhuman home-making efforts, and know that, provided I follow her example, one day I too will have a bureau solely dedicated to giftwrapping and 23 towels in my guest bathroom.



Okay, getting the tongue out of my cheek for a second, this book is a little too much for all but the most obsessive-compulsive, but sometimes it is really truly lovely to live vicariously through Martha Stewart.



There are plenty of useful tips in this book, and lots of lovely - and cheap - decoration ideas (who knew a lick of eau-de-nil paint on an old wooden crate could have such a magical effect?) Under Martha's organisational influence, I have finally put away my ironing (now in little colour coded piles, get me); bought a Dymo label machine; and filed six years' worth of bank statements in date order (this last little habit of Martha's must have made the police's job considerably easier when they arrested her for fraud). Hell, I have even googled "bookcloth" and where to buy it (Falkiner Fine Papers in London's Charing Cross, if anyone's interested, and they do mail order).



If you are chronically messy, this book isn't going to change everything, but it might just inspire you to tidy up, adopt a few good habits, and make your world a little bit nicer.

This beautifully-illustrated book was very refreshing. It shows simple, and inexpensive, ways of making each room look picture-perfect. In a few hours, my home looks far prettier,and the ideas are easy to effect with junk shop finds. The photographs are inspiring, and up to date. Organizing should be an aesthetic pleasure and Martha Stewart certainly provides the means to do it in the minimum time. Children would surely enjoy being asked to help as well, for example, by making hand-made labels, decanting products into pretty containers, etc.

A lovely book, and a good choice for a Christmas present or wedding present as it is so optimistic.

Not sure why previous reviewers have raved about this book to the extent that they have. If I'd seen it in a shop and had a chance to flick through it, I wouldn't have wasted my money as it basically states the obvious. Very disappointing. Also, if you're expecting a hard-back, as I was from the description ('hardcover'), you won't be happy as it's actually a card-back.

Absolutely one of the best interior books I own, they should seriously consider making this one drool proof!

Not only is it filled with the most beautiful photographs, you can also learn how to make loose chair covers, a roman blind, a drawstring bag, preserves and a few more homely things. I paid £1.80 for my copy from an amazon seller .. NEW! - needless to say I am absolutely chuffed that I got such a bargain. This will be on the bedside table for many nights to come and on the coffee table the rest of the time!

I have had this book for many years and the styles don't date at all.
It uses a lot of white and light colours in its interia. It has a mixure of old and new furniture and styles.

There is a section on how to cover your chairs.

If you are tired of following every style fashion (you know: this spring you have to do fuchsia and spring green, next autumn everything has to turn brown and spring 2006 your interior should be yellow) this is a really appetising book for getting new ideas. Perhaps some of the info is like "duh.. I already knew that!" But on the other hand, sometimes you need to be reminded of the obvious. Or sometimes you need to get a bit of assurance, that your way of looking at things is actually o.k. This book does it both.

Jane Cumberbatch gives good information and a "good feel". The style is really pure and simple. Fuss free and logical. You can throw out fashion dictates and follow your own ideas. It made a lot of sense to me and me and my family are enjoying our "new house" tremendously

I love this book! Simple and beautiful, it is a balm for the soul. I read it while sipping a cup of tea and then again in bed and again and again since. There are so many inspirational ideas to choose from and there is a feeling of having gone back to basic comfort and real enjoyment of the things with which we choose to surround ourselves.
